The
conscious projection you see all around you is an entire level removed
from the unconscious mind. So while at times the universe you see can be
horrible and frightening, it's nothing compared to the awful thought
system it springs from. In fact, because the projection you see is a
defense, you could say that the universe exists because it is tolerable
to you compared to what's in your unconscious mind. The world may not
always be tolerable to everyone – often resulting in murders and
suicides – but it's still a walk in the park compared to the deep,
