The Ego's Chaotic Nature

The ego's chaotic nature also ensures that there will never be a unified theory of the universe that will hold up over time, because the universe isn't really based on the thought of unity - it's based on the thought of separation and division. However, it includes fascination and ingenious patterns that help to give it the illusion of unity.

That's why you shouldn't be impressed by every new discovery or theory about the universe. So what if superstrings can make gravity work at both the Newtonian and subatomic levels? An illusion is still an illusion. We're not saying you shouldn't do research or analysis, if that's what you do. Go for it. Just try to remember that your'e doing it during a pre-programmed dream script.

The Separation from God

The ego believes in the separation from God, and the seeming separation that is being constantly acted out here was a very upsetting thing for you, to say the least. You'll experience thousands of times in your life when things seem to be going good, just fine, and then suddenly something will happen to upset you. It may be something you think is big or small. It doesn't matter. If it's disturbing your peace of mind even in the slightest, it's symbolic of the separation. The Subject of Reincarnation

We should emphasize something about the subject of reincarnation. We talk about it as though it actually happened. Yet just like everything else, it's only a dream. Won't Always Forgive Right Away

Perhaps you don't fully understand that the benefits of true forgiveness are for you. You don't have to - nor will you - always forgive immediately. Occasionally you'll have to forgive something that happened a half an hour ago, or two days ago. That's the way it goes. Nobody's perfect, and  right now there's an epidemic of anger going on in the world, making it even more difficult for you to not respond. Even 2,000 years ago, J was tempted to identify with the body at times, but because he was a master, he forgave and got over it very quickly. The Ego's Trap

Whenever you judge the dream figures and thus make your dream real, you fall right in to the ego's trap - whether you believe that you must atone for sin, or that others must atone for their sins, or that they deserve your condemnation. The Course says, "You cannot dispel guilt by making it real, and then forgiving it. This is the ego's plan, which it offers instead of dispelling it. The ego believes in atonement through attack, being fully committed to the insane notion that attack is salvation." As the Course goes on to say, "...In the ego's teaching, then , there's is no escape from guilt. You're a Saint

Gary: Sometimes I think I"d have to be a freakin' saint to do all this. I mean, NEVER hold a grievance against anyone? Never judge, condemn, or attack? Never have any bad thoughts without noticing them and forgiving? And NEVER believe my anger is justified? It's impossible, man.

Arten: You ARE a saint, Gary; you just don't know it yet. As far as it being impossible to do the Course, you're wrong. The Course says that miracles are habits. You will experience more and more that the Course is right when it says, "Anger is NEVER justified. Attack has no foundation. It is here escape from fear begins, and will be made complete."

Why are these things important? Because, as the Course also teaches, whether you are attacking others with your own thoughts, or somebody else appears to be attacking you, verbally or physically, "The secret of salvation is but this: That you are doing this unto yourself. No mater what the form of the attack, this still is true. Whoever takes the role of enemy and of attacker, still is this the truth. Whatever seems to be the cause of any pain and suffering you feel, this is still true. For you would not react at all to figures in a dream you knew that you were dreaming. Gonna Take Willpower

Not only do you have tremendous resistance to facing what you think is your awful guilt underneath the surface, but simultaneously, your ego is terrified that to do so successfully, and change your mind about it, would result in losing its identity as a separate individual. People Who Murder

Guilt is just a thought in the mind, and no consequence can really be created by an action in the world. Acts like murder and suicide do recycle the guilt that everyone unconsciously thinks is real, and keeps it going. People who kill others or themselves see death as an escape. Why Fear It?

There's a part of you that knows it's just a dream and there's nothing to fear. That's what your life will be likes someday - when all your secret sins and hidden hates have been forgiven. No matter what you see, or what appears to happen to you or anyone around you, you'll know there's no reason to be afraid. The images in what people call their real lives can be hellish at times. Yet it's all just symbolic of the ego thought system of fear, guilt, and death - and it's not real. The Holy Spirit is No Fool

If it weren't for the Holy Spirit, your situation would be hopeless. Your hatred and guilt would remain forever trapped in the depths of your unconscious. Happily for you, the Holy Spirit is no fool - and the ego is no match for Him. When you join with the Holy Spirit's forgiveness, the ego is no match for you either. On some level, the ego knows this - and is always in fear for its purported existence. So are you, but only when you identify with your ego instead of the Holy Spirit. The Kingdom of Suckdom

Right now, when things go bad instead of good, that's when you really experience your unconscious guilt. You experience it as actual physical pain, or psychological suffering, or both. This makes the separation seem real to you. "The kingdom of suckdom" is merely your own unconscious guilt coming to the surface, causing you to suffer. Yet, the Course teaches that the guiltless mind CANNOT suffer. God Did Not Create Opposites

What is everything you see around you except a series of pictures or images; a movie of your own hatred and guilt? Yes, you have some seemingly good experiences mixed in that are designed to mask things, but that's just duality. On this level, the duality that is perceived in the universe simply reflects the duality of your own split mind, symbolized as opposites and counterparts. So you have good and bad, life and death, hot and cold, north and south, east and west, inward and outward, up and down, dark and light, left and right, sickness and health, rich and poor, yin and yang, love and hate, wet and dry, male and female, hard and soft, near and far, and a thousand other polarities and dual forces - all of which have nothing to do with God, Who is perfectly whole and complete and would never create anything that isn't. ~ The Disappearance of the Universe   Facebook.com/DWMJF/photo

What is the Ego Really Worried About?

The ego is always trying to find ways to prevent you from closely examining its thought system. "Loudly the ego tells you not to look inward, for if you do your eyes will light on sin, and God will strike you blind."

As J explains, this is not what the ego is REALLY worried about. "...Beneath your fear to look within because of sin is yet another fear, and one which makes the ego tremble. What if you looked within and saw no sin? This 'fearful' question is one the ego never asks. And you who ask it now are threatening the ego's whole defensive system too seriously for it to bother to pretend it is your friend."

Don't let that last statement scare you, by the way - for that is never J's intention. The ego already hates you. If it gets vicious, so what? It would have eventually, anyway. The weird thing is that now when you think about it, you realize that whatever it is that hates you is not really on the outside, it's on the inside - right along with you. What Goes Around Comes Around

You need your defense because the alternative is unthinkable to your ego - that you might actually look upon your own guilt - the horror of which is presently covered over by the world. The ego has you convinced that to look upon the hideousness of this guilt is the equivalent of death. Self-Hatred: The Nature of the Ego

So what is the nature of the ego that you carry in your unconscious, and that it doesn't want you to look at? Its nature is hatred. Even if they see the hatred, which most people rationalize or gloss over, they still don't realize that it's really SELF-hatred. So you and others see people in the world who hate, attack, and even kill each other, and who would hurt or even kill you if they got the chance. The variations of this are endless. It can be as simple as being made uncomfortable by people you disagree with, personally or politically. It can show up in the form of people at work who try to make your life difficult, or relatives who don't encourage you. You Want Them There

Make no mistake, the people that give you trouble, you want them to be there, without exception. They're your scapegoats. If you could just remember that fact the next time some apparently real flamer pushes your buttons, then you could hold your tongue, think with the Holy Spirit, and change your mind. You want them to be there, all right. Always. You need it. That's how you trick yourself into thinking you're not guilty, or at least not terribly guilty, so you can cope most of the time - for the guilt is somewhere else. As long as you're stuck in the maze, you can't see that the whole thing is unnecessary, because you were never really guilty in the first place. The Nature of the Ego Thought System

We're going to take a brief look at the nature of the ego thought system, not to scare you, but just so you'll understand that although it may be ugly, it is not you. The way to get this is by looking at it with the Holy Spirit. The ego doesn't want you to look at it. The ego is afraid of your power to choose against it. If you're looking at it, then you must be doing it with the Holy Spirit. If you're joined with Him, then you're no longer in your wrong mind, but looking at things with your right mind. You're no longer an effect instead of a cause. You're no longer alone as a guilty individual, but reconnected to your Self. Look at the ego without judgment or fear. Everyone is Innocent

Everyone, and thus yourself, is innocent because what you are seeing is not true. How can what you're seeing be true if the separation from God never occurred? Seek and Do Not Find

The ego is a master illusionist, and one of the ways it diverts your attention, from the moment you're born, is by giving you PROBLEMS. These problems are usually right in front of you, and the answers to these problems have to be found out there in the world and utilized. It doesn't matter if it's your own survival that's the problem, or something as seemingly lofty as attaining world peace.

The problems and the answers are always somewhere out there in the world or the universe. "The truth it out there," says your generation. It doesn't matter if they're talking about extraterrestrials, or any of the ego's other substitute mysteries and problems. For the REAL truth is NOT out there - because the real problem is not out there. But you keep looking out there, never realizing that, as the Course says about the ego, "Its dictates, then, can be summed up simply as, 'Seek and do not find.'"

Sons of God is Hardly a Revelation

The term Sons of God is used a lot in A Course in Miracles, and some people see this when reading the first five chapters of the Urtext and just "know" this means that God DID create individuals. But what they actually "know" is a totally misinformed beginner's interpretation of the Course. The fact that the Course uses the term Sons of God is hardly a revelation. It is used throughout the Course to refer to the seemingly split-off parts of the Sonship, the ones who THINK they are separate. The Course also uses the term Son of God, singular, to describe Christ, which is perfect Oneness with God, and which is what they REALLY are. The Course is so consistent about that all the way through all three books that to ascribe any other meaning to the terms is, in a word, inept.

There are also those who contend that the Course says you should do certain things in the world. There's an early quote that says, "Listen to my voice, learn to undo error, and do something (act) to correct it." Well, what you DO is give it to the Holy Spirit, who is in the mind. It's NEVER about doing anything in the world. Never! If you're inspired to do something after you forgive, fine. But that's never the focus of the Course. To teach people otherwise is completely inaccurate. ~ Your Immortal Reality

The Qualifications for Love

The ego adds the sly trick of having just as much projection in special love relationships as special hate relationships, thus helping to ensure the continued dynamic of recycling guilt. If you'll look hard enough, which most people won't, then you'll see that love in this world is always qualified in some way. Special Love and Victimization

Even in joining, there is still separation in this world. To bring this about, the ego made SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS. With duality, you have special love AND special hate. Love is now selective rather than all-encompassing, and so it is not really love, but passes for it. When you appear to enter an incarnation, you are immediately part of some kind of family - which means you are not a part of other families, economic classes, cultures, ethnic groups, and countries. You are already different than others in many ways. You even have competition between families, parts of families, and individuals within families.

The special relationships within your family, whether biological, adopted, or in a foster home, may be good or bad, loving or hateful - resulting in either special love or some kind of victimization. Everyone who dreams their way into this world sees themselves as a body from the beginning, and thus a very special body indeed. Your Body is not Important or Real

The thought of separation from God has been projected seemingly outward from the mind - and you along with it, and an entire universe that includes your body, as well as all other bodies has been made. Your body seems to be attached to you, but it's actually outside of you like everything else you perceive. Projecting onto Others

This universe, the world, and your body give form to a defense structure in which you hide from your imagined sin, guilt, and the resulting fear of God's vengeance. The Making of the Cosmos

The making of the cosmos is your protection from God, your ingenious hiding place. At the same time, the universe becomes the ultimate scapegoat. Now, both the cause and the blame for your problem of separation, not to mention the blame for all of your illusory replacement problems, can be found - if you look hard enough along with the ego - somewhere outside of you. Indeed, a whole new level has been made in which the thought system of sin, guilt, fear, attack, and defense can be acted out in such a way as to protect your seemingly separate mind, which you presently think of as your soul, from your terrible, yet completely unconscious guilt and fear.

The Motivation For This World

There is no other spiritual discipline (outside of A Course in Miracles) that understands and explains the motivation behind the making of this world, the same motivation that runs it today. That motivation is fear, always ultimately traceable to the fear of God. The trans-temporal, non-spatial, seemingly separated mind is in a paralyzing state of fear because of a punishment you believe is coming from God. So the ego convinces you that you need a defense, without bothering to mention that the defense it offers is designed to ensure its own survival through your individuality. In fact, if you look at the last four syllables of the wold INDIVIDUALITY,  you will see that they spell DUALITY. The Mind is Like an Iceberg

Practically all of your mind is unconscious to you, just like almost all of an iceberg is underneath the surface of the water. Characteristics of Heaven

Heaven, although it is beyond all words, has these kinds of characteristics: It is perfect, formless, changeless, abstract, eternal, innocent, whole, abundant, complete Love. It is reality; it is Life. God and Christ and Christ's Creations are perfect oneness. There is nothing else. This is the domain of God's Will - the Knowledge of the Father. To describe the experience of your awareness of this perfect oneness is not really possible, but I assure you that you will know it when you have a temporary experience of it.
